Analysts were predicting huge rises in the stock's value, some as high as 60 percent. Although IHOP had just brought attention to itself by entering the public arena in 1991, it had actually been enjoying increases in its revenues every month since the early 1980s. In August 1992, IHOP made another strategic move in its effort to dominate the family-dining market when it acquired 23 units in the Pacific Northwest from JB's Restaurants, Inc.

The school said in an email to students that bringing back police “at this time” would be counterproductive. The university said it will offer an alternative venue for the protests after exams and graduation. But although the pancake restaurants remained profitable, some of the other acquired subsidiaries siphoned off those profits. European lenders called in loans of $5 million, and franchisees won a lawsuit, claiming they had been forced to pay inflated prices for supplies and equipment. Lapin’s quick and massive expansion, coupled with tightened credit and a cooling of franchise fervor, almost imploded the business.

“I really wanted to showcase state-of-the-art technology but in a way that was grounded and spoke to our primitive nature.” Cutting-edge tech from Bang & Olufsen, Lutron, and JoshAI is balanced by curvaceous seating and unique art. Bursts of hot pink and apple green energize Steven Cordrey’s design for the home’s veranda. Hand-beaded light fixtures illuminate the seating areas, which feature tables and chairs from Janus et Cie’s Amalfi Coast outdoor collection. As the Pasadena Showcase House of Design enters its 59th year, it’s returning to a familiar setting. The Potter Daniels Manor, the English Tudor Revival–style residence that hosted the 1975 and 1996 showcase houses, has been reimagined with 30 new interior and exterior spaces for the 2024 edition, which is now open until May 19.

So Many Delicious Menu Choices at IHOP

Unit renovations often also included the implementation of a double-galley kitchen, which consisted of two identical smaller-scale kitchens, one of which could be closed down during slow periods in order to avoid excessive operation expenses. Shortly after the commencement of unit renovations and the introduction of lunch and dinner items, IHOP began experiencing a steady increase in sales. Most newly renovated IHOP restaurants doubled their annual sales, and soon many of them were breaking the $1 million mark each year, up from $300,000 a year before the changes. Many franchisees attributed this sudden success in the lunch and dinner market to the attractive prices offered at IHOP.

How Old Is IHOP?

“One of the main things we did was add a window seat, which looks like it should always have been here,” Slesinski says. “Our whole goal with this space was basically to turn the lights on in the room, bring in the garden that’s outside, and kind of have an experience of a breath of fresh air,” Brosio says. While IHOP enjoyed a period of overall growth in sales and earnings, its monthly same store sales results began to falter due to changing consumer demand and heightened competition. To call attention to its non-breakfast offerings, the firm launched an "After Breakfast" menu which included new items such as a southwest chicken fajita salad, a sourdough bacon cheeseburger, and herb-roasted chicken. Owner Christine Moore pumps out casual breakfasts and lunches at both Lincoln and Little Flower Candy Co. in Pasadena.

Peltier and designer Marina Kelly installed an arch to divide the bedroom from the sitting area, breaking up the large space. Cozy Stylish Chic Creative Director Jeanne K. Chung and designers Angela Lee and Caroline Meloche brightened the dark wood-paneled library to create a space where residents can unplug. Wallpaper was added to the ceiling and the backs of the bookcases, and heavy wood blinds were replaced with soft draperies and Roman shades to make the space feel lighter. The firm used a mix of fabrics and wall coverings by Ralph Lauren Home from Designers Guild throughout the space.

The new pancake was supported by television spots featuring Cliff, who promoted the new IHOP product as well as Nabisco's Cream of Wheat. Furthermore, almost 20 million coupons offering a free stack of Country Griddle Cakes with the purchase of an IHOP entree were distributed on Nabisco Cream of Wheat boxes across the country. Meanwhile, SVIDO had begun searching for a buyer for the IHOP Corporation. After approximately four years of unsuccessful attempts to sell the company to an outside suitor, Herzer and other members of IHOP's management began planning a leveraged buyout, enlisting the services of several different institutional investors. In May 1987, this investment team, led by Herzer, purchased IHOP from SVIDO for an estimated $50 million.

Who Is the Founder Of IHOP?

“I really feel like the dining room is a forgotten room,” says the designer, who set out to prove how vital the space is to a home. The room is anchored by a Riva 1920 table made with the wood of a 50,000-year-old Kauri tree, which Levine surrounded with seating for 12. Another seating area with views of the garden was designed for more intimate dining, games, or meetings, and it’s illuminated by a Murano glass chandelier. At the far end of the room, Levine installed a lush purple sofa with cocktail tables, creating the perfect spot for drinks, dessert, or relaxing with a cup of coffee. As one of the country’s oldest house and garden tours, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design benefits the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, an all-volunteer organization that contributes to arts and music nonprofits in Southern California. The event draws more than 25,000 guests each year and offers several dining spaces, including Roe Japanese Fusion, the Tudor Rose Bistro, and Wattle & Daub Tavern.

Jacob Ginn, a second-year University of North Carolina sociology graduate student, said he had been protesting at the encampment for four days, including negotiations with administrators Friday. Meanwhile, a legal group representing pro-Palestinian students is urging the U.S. Department of Education's civil rights office to investigate Columbia's compliance with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for how they have been treated.

Lapin added the A-frame roof to his chalet theme in 1960 when he built the Woodland Hills IHOP on Ventura Boulevard. He thought the architectural style was homey -- an important element for the man who found his greatest success in family restaurants. For the original Toluca Lake restaurant that Lapin started in 1958 with $25,000, he hired a Cordon Bleu chef to create unusual pancakes, such as Tahitian Orange Pineapple and Kauai Coconut.

The protests have even spread to Europe, with French police removing dozens of students from the Sorbonne university after pro-Palestinian protesters occupied the main courtyard. In Canada, student protest camps have popped up at the University of Ottawa, McGill University in Montreal and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, The Canadian Press reported. Whether ballpark and racetrack food remains appealing enough off site to support hundreds of locations remains to be seen.

In 1996 the IHOP system included over 700 International House of Pancakes restaurants in 36 states, Canada, and Japan. In 1981 IHOP became a private company when Jahn repurchased 52 percent of its stock. The son of a professional drummer, Lapin was born in New York but moved to Los Angeles with his family when he was a teenager. After serving in the Army, he went through film school at USC and worked in television production.

The lunch and dinner menu was also crafted to accommodate the eating habits of IHOP's more nutritionally aware customers by offering vegetarian plates, chicken, and seafood. IHOP Corporation operates and franchises the International House of Pancakes restaurant concept in the United States and Canada. In fact, IHOP is among those companies responsible for the prevalence of affordable full-service family dining. The company now stands as the third-largest family-style dining chain, just behind Denny's Corporation and Waffle House Inc. In 2003, the IHOP system included over 1,136 International House of Pancakes restaurants in 48 states and Canada. Each year, IHOP restaurants serve over 700 million pancakes, 20 million pounds of breakfast meats, and over 300 million cups of coffee.

A Thibault wall covering graces the entry, and a Fibreworks runner leads guests up the stairs. Designer Mark Hermogeno paid tribute to Silver Queen Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes in the kitchen, butler’s pantry, family room, powder room, and mudroom. “We had thought, What if she actually came back to life and asked us to remodel the space? “We wanted to concentrate on polished nickels and polished chromes to get that silver feel back in,” he says of the fixtures, hardware, and lighting by Kohler and Kallista.

The introduction of Country Griddle Cakes came at an excellent time for IHOP, and the new pancakes and their advertising campaign were a quick success. The 1990s saw a more nutritionally aware clientele, and pancakes have a good overall nutritional profile. This was especially true for Country Griddle Cakes, which contain nonfat yogurt, Cream of Wheat cereal, and skim milk.

Hermogeno and designer Lynette Chin brought in a mix of vintage and new furnishings in the family room, incorporating performance fabrics for durability. “[We made] sure that it was a really usable room, that it didn’t just look nice,” Hermogeno says. Designer Rachel Scheff used the home’s spectacular ceiling, woodwork, and stained glass as the inspirations for her fanciful, flora- and fauna-filled foyer.

Same store sales appeared to be gaining momentum in 2003 as IHOP management worked to position the company as the leading family dining destination in the industry. Usurping competitors Denny's and Waffle House from their top spots, however, was contingent upon the success of the new franchise model and the firm's aggressive branding campaign. The firm began to restructure its debt in order to strengthen its financial position and brought in Julia A. Stewart as president and chief operating officer to head up the company's expansion efforts. Under her leadership, IHOP's management team began taking several steps to restore the firm's same store sales growth.

Almost 90 percent of IHOP's units were franchised, with its largest concentrations of restaurants in California, Florida, Texas, and Japan. Systemwide sales continued to increase, positioning IHOP among the leaders in the family-dining market. Analyst predictions of the early 1990s rang true when Forbes magazine once again added the company to its "200 Best Small Companies" list as IHOP's stock price rose by nearly 60 percent over a 12-month period. Designers Frank Slesinski and Serena Brosio collaborated on the charming living room in the Gatehouse.

Overall, 76 new restaurants were opened during including its 1,000th location--which bolstered revenue by 7 percent and profits by 14 percent over the previous year. IHOP's Japan licensee terminated its agreement with the firm in 2001, forcing the company to shutter its 32 Japanese restaurants. By 1995, IHOP was opening more than 50 new restaurants each year in the United States, Canada, and Japan, and was planning to open almost 90 new units in 1996.

Prior to the acquisition, this geographic area had been almost completely controlled by Denny's, Inc., another large full-service chain whose primary focus is family dining. IHOP's management saw the 23 JB's units as a prime opportunity to penetrate the Pacific Northwest market and quickly began converting the restaurants to the IHOP concept. In 1979, a majority of IHOP Corporation's stock was purchased by Wienerwald Holding, a Swiss company that controlled other restaurant chains in the United States, including the 225-unit Lum's chain.

The Shops at the Showcase offer an array of merchants, from handmade jewelry to artisanal chocolates, and are also home to the Shops’s Wine & Cheese Bar. Zippia gives an in-depth look into the details of IHOP, including salaries, political affiliations, employee data, and more, in order to inform job seekers about IHOP. The employee data is based on information from people who have self-reported their past or current employments at IHOP. The data on this page is also based on data sources collected from public and open data sources on the Internet and other locations, as well as proprietary data we licensed from other companies. Sources of data may include, but are not limited to, the BLS, company filings, estimates based on those filings, H1B filings, and other public and private datasets.

A Restaurants & Institutions survey revealed that the top trends for the food service industry to follow were home-style value meals, combo breakfasts, anything in a skillet, and pancakes. It seemed that IHOP's strategic priorities were right on the money, and the company entered the mid-1990s in a position to strengthen its standing in the family dining market. The first International House of Pancakes restaurant opened in 1958 in Toluca Lake, California, under the direction of founder Al Lapin, Jr. After winning over consumers with its affordable pancake breakfasts and numerous flavored syrups, the business quickly expanded into a small chain of restaurants. Weekend patrons were often confronted with lines that stretched all the way out the establishments' doors. A year later, in 1959, the IHOP chain became an operating division of International Industries, a public company that held more than 20 different businesses and was strongly rooted in the franchising concept.

With the election now just over six months away, the vast majority of voters, probably about 9 in 10, have made up their minds. Only a handful of states are truly in doubt. But those locked-in voters and states are evenly balanced between the two sides. The unveiling of Dhoni's Samurai look, featuring a sleek half-ponytail, sent waves of excitement through the cricketing community. Shared across social media platforms by the Chennai Super Kings' official handles, the image was aptly captioned "7 Samurai," invoking memories of Dhoni's iconic long-haired avatar from his debut days.

The most recent Quinnipiac University national poll for example, showed 16% of registered voters saying they would support Kennedy if the election were being held today. Several other surveys have shown results in a similar range. A newly released study by the Pew Research Center finds that 91% of people who voted for Biden last time and 94% of those who voted for Trump plan to vote for the same person this year. Registered voters who did not cast a ballot in 2020 are almost evenly divided, Pew found.

Still, in 2021, California had its hottest June to July in the observational period, and researchers have established a strong relationship between warm, dry summers and area burned in the state’s forests, he said. Recent polls have shown Kennedy getting more support from the Republican camp, which could be “a function of our getting the word out about him,” Smith said. That has included a public endorsement of Biden earlier this month by 15 members of the Kennedy family. “His role and who he takes votes from is likely to be quite dynamic” as the campaign develops, said Lis Smith, the veteran Democratic strategist who leads the party’s efforts against Kennedy. One reason it’s hard to guess how much support Kennedy will win this fall is that polls have a hard time measuring how much support he has now.

Cut out all the shapes, then remove the excess dough between your pieces. By removing the excess rather than moving your cut pieces, you will avoid distorting the shapes, which can affect how well they’ll fit together. Re-roll the excess dough to cut any remaining shapes, or use it to make extras like gingerbread people. The right tools will make your construction project go much more smoothly.

Keep any leftovers stored in a Ziploc bag in the fridge for up to 5 days. Of course, you can add vanilla, almond, orange, butter, or lemon extract to the icing. You can use leftover royal icing to pipe small details or follow this step-by-step guide of basic decorating techniques for extra-festive gingerbread folks. If you plan to build a house just for display, appearance and aroma are more important than flavor, so choose a stiffer dough like this Construction Gingerbread.

It also makes the house smell like the holidays and fills the kitchen with Christmas cheer! I loved making this recipe, and I know you’ll enjoy it too. Stand up two walls at a time so they support each other. Starting with an end wall and side wall, pipe a thick L-shaped line of icing on the prepared base to secure the bottoms of the two walls. Place another line of icing where the walls meet. Use your hands or a sturdy object like a can or box to support the walls while they set.

Just like Christmas lights, there is no need to keep it up year-round. Royal icing will be best if used within 3 days of it being made. Make sure to store in an airtight container or it will dry out and harden and be unusable. I'm Lisa Longley, and I am committed to giving you simple dinner ideas and recipes that are easy to make; recipes that will fill your home with joy. I am the owner and author of SimpleJoy.com and I'm so glad that you are here. This is a brief overview of how easy this recipe is.

Can you use regular frosting for gingerbread houses?

The most successful way to roll out this gingerbread cookie dough is between two sheets of parchment paper. It will stick to your counter no matter how much you flour it. As a hobby farmer, business owner, and mom of five, I'm all about keeping it simple in the kitchen. Let's work together to find something for your table. Royal icing can be used immediately or stored with plastic wrap pressed against the top and completely sealed in the fridge for a few days.

When you run the back of a spoon through the icing, it should hold its shape. Confectioners Sugar – Also known as powdered sugar or icing sugar. Confectioners’ sugar is a very fine form of granulated sugar that dissolves easily. Because of its fine texture, it’s often used to make frostings and icings. Here’s everything you need to know about how to make a gingerbread house.

Food coloring is all you need to make gingerbread house glue in your favorite colors! I prefer using gel food coloring, but any type will do. It is easy to make and work with and really forgiving. The best way to use the icing is to transfer it to a piping bag. You will be able to be more detailed using a bag and can get into the cracks and crevices better. Gingerbread House decorating is one of my favorite holiday traditions!

Drafted by Bears 25 years ago, another QB from L.A. shares advice for Caleb Williams

You will also need molasses to make these gingerbread houses, which you should be able to find in the baking aisle of your grocery store. Don’t forget to pick up the meringue powder as well, you will need it to get your icing nice and firm! You can find exact measurements below in the recipe card.

Then add the roof and wait a minute before adding more “snow” or “icing” to the top. Gingerbread house icing is typically made from confectioners sugar, egg whites, and cream of tartar. This recipe is easy to make and only requires a few ingredients. The best frosting to make a gingerbread house is our recipe below.

But the day can quickly go south if you bought a kit from the store. They are so easy to work with for the most part, but often they don’t give you enough icing and the icing you do get often doesn’t work great. Add a colorful decoration to your holiday table with this Gum Drop Gingerbread House. Topped with rainbow candies and gum drops, this festive gingerbread house is great for the whole family to do together. If you’re looking for another option, meringue powder is a great choice. It’s often used in recipes as a safe, alternative to fresh egg whites.

Simple Tip!

My favorite thing to do is decorate the house, not build it! Though, with this gingerbread icing recipe, building the house is pretty stress-free too. Here’s my completely homemade gingerbread house recipe including how to bake, construct, and decorate with royal icing and buttercream. Everything can be prepared in advance, see my make ahead tip after the recipe instructions.

Gingerbread house icing is more than just icing, it’s the glue to hold your gingerbread house together. This is most definitely the most difficult part of making a gingerbread house… but not anymore! The key is to make sure you have the right icing that dries quickly and holds well. I’m including templates (in the recipe card) to make either 1 larger gingerbread house (which I demonstrate in the video) or two smaller houses (shown above). This recipe will make enough to do either one of these.

This recipe is a basic Royal icing that is made to the right consistency for building a gingerbread house. Royal icing is the “glue” that holds the house together. It’s also the glue adhering any candies to the walls and roof.

That ensures it will dry out fast, which will keep your designs from smudging and your walls from budging (if you'll pardon the rhyme). Honestly, using this homemade gingerbread icing will be your secret tool to keep a gingerbread house together. Simply add it to the back of the pieces and hold them together.

You will want to scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post for the full recipe card with measurements. Scroll down for a detailed set of instructions on how to assemble a gingerbread house. Jamielyn Nye is the founder and recipe creator at I Heart Naptime. She is also the author of the I Heart Naptime Cookbook. Here you will find easy family-friendly recipes for every occasion. As you begin mixing the ingredients they will form a pasty icing mixture however you’ll need to continue mixing to make sure it’s thick and glossy.

A fun and festive project to do with the kids, building a gingerbread house is a great activity to do on a snowy, cold winter weekend. I refrigerated the decorated pieces for 20 mins after I had my design so they were a little more solid and the frosting would set a bit. This gave me time to clean up some of my mess and switch my frosting to a new bag so I could use a different tip for the icing to use as glue for the house assembly. Pipe royal icing to make decorative designs around the walls of the house and roof.

Using the proper icing (in this case, royal icing) will make a huge difference in how secure your gingerbread house is, since the icing is the glue that holds it together. I’ve had success with decorating mine right away, but do what works best for you. Of course, you can also turn to tools that do all this work for you. These awesome Gingerbread Pop-Out Cutters simplify the design process in a snap. Just roll your dough, cut out two of each shape, imprint the design, and bake — you’ll have a sweet house that fits together perfectly, no math required! A fluffy gingerbread house icing that works as the “glue” to keep the house together!

The dough is a little sticky from the molasses, so I recommend chilling in two discs before rolling out. I am an avid vintage cookbook collector, cook, baker, and total foodie. I love sharing new, fun, creative recipes and great classic recipes, just like my Grandma used to make! Every recipe on BIWL is tested to ensure that cooks of any experience level can succeed.

Locals called it Pecker Point, presumably because it was a prime makeout venue. For the Stahls, it became the blank screen on which they projected their dreams of a life together, a place to build a future, a family, and a house like no other. What some call the best fried chicken in New Orleans (or America) comes to L.A. The great-granddaughter of Willie Mae’s founder opens her Venice restaurant on Lincoln Boulevard.

Instead, she accepts the proposal of an old widower, Mr. Boran. When Mr. Boran attempts to rape Lavinia, James’ and Martha’s son Marshall intervenes. Marshall and Lavinia develop a relationship and soon marry, making Lavinia the mistress of Tall Oaks. Lavinia soon becomes aware that Marshall, unlike his father, is an abusive, violent man who raped Belle and fathered Jamie.

“Saka Saka” extends the young chef’s reach to a global audience with stories and recipes that make you want to get cooking. Black-eyed pea and beet hummus, the Cameroon-style beef and plantain stew called beef kondré, Senegalese yassa chicken and a fantastic dessert of spiced pineapple with cassava crumble are just some of the recipes worth exploring. My favorite cookbooks bring me into the kitchen with the authors. Maya-Camille Broussard’s book “Justice of the Pies” makes me feel like I’m sitting at a stool in her kitchen, listening as she recounts the story of how she started her Chicago bakery after her father died. Lavinia, born in Ireland, is an indentured servant who comes to live at Tall Oaks tobacco plantation in southern Virginia in 1791. She is placed in the care of Belle, the master’s illegitimate daughter.

Books

They shine a light on the best of what cookbooks can be. In her second cookbook, New York Times Cooking columnist Yewande Komolafe‘s 75 approachable recipes explore the West African cuisines that color Nigeria’s capital city of Lagos. Born in Berlin and raised in Lagos, Komolafe came to America for college, where she built her culinary resume while living as an undocumented immigrant for a decade. “My Everyday Lagos” weaves this history throughout, describing the struggles Komolafe encountered and the experience of returning to Lagos in 2016 after 18 years away from her homeland. Stock up your pantry with Komolafe’s dried spice blends, experiment with street foods like yam fritters or go all out with dishes meant to mark special occasions, like braised bone-in goat leg.

Or if they do, the results are always less than stellar. That’s why I was so excited to read through Brian Levy’s “Good & Sweet” dedicated to baking with no refined sweeteners. Photographer Andrea Gentl might best be known for her images — lush, award-winning pictures of food, chefs and faraway places. She’s also an avid cook, and “Cooking With Mushrooms” is the first cookbook she has written (definitely not the first she has photographed).

Several years ago, I took on making masa from scratch, soaking corn kernels in calcium hydroxide to break down their outer kernels — a process called nixtamalization — then grinding them into a dough to make tortillas. The resulting tortillas were crumbly and chewy, and while I didn’t have success with them, I did have a newfound appreciation for the art of working with masa. And while I have used a reliable bag of Maseca throughout my life to make tortillas, it wasn’t until I tried Masienda’s masa that my cooking changed for the better.

“I rediscovered the untamed and varied world of mushrooms — the diverse, healthy, adaptogenic magic mycelia of the fungi kingdom — through photography,” writes Gentl. “I have always been a bit obsessed with mushrooms.” If you’re obsessed with mushrooms too (who isn’t, really?), then this book is for you. I love the photos in the “Mushroom Varieties” section that celebrate their glorious shapes and colors, close-ups of all the curves and dimples of the gills and caps that make them uniquely mesmerizing — from beech to woodear. I loved the two female protagonists, Lavinia and Belle, who narrate this story. They narrate in alternating chapters which has become a very popular technique for writers. I’m not always fond of it, I think it can often make a story feel awkward or disconnected.

This novel reminds me of ‘March’ by Geraldine Brooks which I would also recommend to readers. Part of that story takes place on a cotton plantation that employs freed slaves and there are similar relationships between the characters. The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom is complicated and compelling with realistic characters and complex relationships. There is a richness in detail for the setting and the period. Grissom is able to paint a vivid picture of the love of a family and the joy in the simple things in life as well as the deeply moving sorrow that affected many of the characters in the book. The basic plot of The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom was intriguing.

These events bring about tension at Tall Oaks, and theslaves are severely beat and mistreated by Rankin, the estate overseer. Many of the characters in this novel come vividly alive. But Belle is a stronger, more fully fleshed out and consistently motivated character than Lavinia. Some of the plot twists depend on characters making false assumptions that seem unlikely.

Before hepassed the control of the estate to Marshall, Will buys Belle and her son,Jamie, as well as Ben, Lucy, and their kids to protect them from Marshall.Meanwhile, Marshall drinks heavily and warns Lavinia not to get too comfortablewith the slaves. He also kidnaps Jamie and regularly forces himself on Beattie, which results in two unwanted pregnancies. Even after giving birth to theirdaughter, Elle, Lavinia feels miserable and powerless to help the slaves, andturns to opium for comfort. With the captain’s death, Miss Marsha’s sister and her family, the Maddens, come up to the Pyke estate to bring Marsha to Williamsburg with them. Even as Lavinia grows to be a woman, she stilllongs to return to her family at Tall Oaks.

One of its members is Belle, who also lives on the margins of two different worlds because she is the greatly loved, illegitimate daughter of the master of the plantation. The reader is drawn into the interconnected lives of two families, one white and free, the other black and enslaved. Most of the novel is told in Lavinia’s first-person voice, with shorter chapters narrated by Belle. As readers, we watch these two young women come of age. How can she reconcile her new position with her past loyalties? Belle’s love for a fellow slave conflicts with her father’s vision of a free life for her far away in Philadelphia.

Soon after Sally’s death, Captain Pyke sends Marshall to Williamsburg tostudy. Meanwhile, he, Miss Martha, and baby Campbell go to Philadelphia tovisit Martha’s parents. Unfortunately, Campbell contracts yellow fever anddies. Miss Martha and Captain Pyke return to the estate, with the captain’shealth failing. Marshall returns to the estate as well, on a visit. He is stillmean-tempered, however, and because he believes Belle to be his father’smistress, brutally rapes her.

While they stood there, the owner of the lot rolled up. In the kismet-filled conversation that followed, Buck agreed to buy the barren one-eighth-acre lot for $13,500, with $100 down and the seller maintaining the mortgage until the Stahls paid it off. A handshake later, the couple owned 1635 Woods Drive. On that site, they would construct Case Study House #22, designed by Pierre Koenig, arguably the most famous of all the houses in the famous Case Study program that Arts & Architecture magazine initiated in 1945. For generations of pilgrims, gawkers, architecture students, and midcentury-modern aficionados, it would be known simply as the Stahl House. Every page punches with color and style, every recipe is an invitation to stop taking yourself so seriously.

Why does Lavinia jump to the conclusion that the man she truly loves is involved with Belle? Though this novel veers toward melodrama, most of the time I was willing to suspend disbelief and be caught up in the story. Born and primarily raised in Los Angeles, she believes L.A. To be the finest food city in the country and might be biased on that count but doesn’t believe she’s wrong. Some of the best parts of the book, like the series, feature Rosenthal’s late parents, Helen and Max, who frequently appeared in Zoom calls at the end of episodes. And one of the best recipes in the book is Helen’s matzoh ball soup, featured in the New York City episode, when Rosenthal brings Daniel Boulud into his mother’s kitchen to try her soup.

Chewy and gooey, not too sweet, with crispy edges and a hint of salt are key characteristics that L.A. Cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger spice canned pumpkin in this classic Thanksgiving pie recipe. Blind-baking the crust ensures a crisp pastry to contrast the smooth custard filling. The Bookish Elf is your single, trusted, daily source for all the news, ideas and richness of literary life. Most importantly, she says, “whenever possible, use these dishes to spark connection and community; for that is at the heart of food for me.” And “if you burn your tahdig on your first go-round, good job! ” Trial and error is essential to deepening your understanding of cooking, and of life. Adeena Sussman’s second cookbook, Shabbat, invites us to accompany her in preparing for the Jewish day of rest as she sees it. Inspired by Sabbath meals of her youth and by local chefs and home cooks, the recipes are sumptuous and imaginative. Friday night dinners might include fig and pomegranate brisket or sweet potatoes with miso tahini butter. For Saturday lunch you might be served jachnun or cauliflower hamin with shug-a-churri sauce.

But I thought it was a clever technique for this story and it was well done. Grisson allows Lavinia to narrate the majority of the story with Belle’s chapters being only a few pages in length. Lavinia’s voice changes as she matures to adulthood and Belle is able to give the reader adult insight into relationships and the motivations behind other character’s actions. We definitely love vintage paperbacks, which we set out in wine crates like records so people can flip through them, cover to cover. I think we’re looking for all the different ways the human experience is interpreted and expressed, and we look to provide a wide variety of ways people communicate those experiences in print.

This is the conclusion I came to after reading Phil Rosenthal’s new cookbook, featuring recipes from every episode of the first four seasons of his Netflix series “Somebody Feed Phil.” His energy and enthusiasm seep through the pages. The best way to experience the book is to watch an episode, salivate over what a wide-eyed Rosenthal is eating, then make it yourself. Or you can make what he ate while he filmed the episode. In Mexico City, Rosenthal tours the farmland where Enrique Olvera grows produce for his restaurants. If you turn to Page 73, you can make the quesadillas Olvera’s son Aldo made for lunch while they were filming.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been standing in my kitchen, feeling snacky and wishing I had just one cookie or one piece of something sweet to nibble on. So when my friend Edd Kimber came out with “Small Batch Bakes,” dedicated to baking small amounts of sweet treats, I nearly doubled over with joy. His single chocolate chip cookie was the first thing that snared me, seeing just a few tablespoons of sugar, flour and chocolate morph into a single perfect cookie that you can eat warm from the oven and with no need for sharing. From there, I made his cinnamon bun slices, which give you the perfect amount of cinnamon buns for a weekend alone, and his individual tarte tatins, which makes having a friend over for pizza and a movie way more special by the time you want dessert. I reach for this book most often when I have a handful of chocolate chips or a piece of fruit hanging around that I want to bake into a delicious treat for myself or to give to a friend. Maisonet tells stories that are visceral and transporting and occasionally provide glimpses into the interior lives of a daughter, mother and grandmother — generations linked through food.

“Simply West African,” by chef Pierre Thiam and Lisa Katayama, is a cookbook that radiates teranga, a word in Wolof, the most widely spoken language in Senegal, that has no direct translation to English. It is, Thiam explains, something akin to joy and love, mixed with community. The first cookbook from Rintaro is by all means a tome. More than 70 recipes from the San Francisco izakaya are contextualized through memories and thorough explainers from Sylvan Mishima Brackett, the restaurant’s Kyoto-born, California-raised chef (who also happens to be a Chez Panisse alum). This is a dense yet still approachable dive into the world of Japanese cooking, with primers on dashi, breaking down whole fish for sashimi, coaxing maximum flavor from tofu and eggs, steaming the perfect donabe, and hand-forming fresh udon. His how-to on butchering a chicken for yakitori — and diagramming an array of possible skewers — is worth the purchase alone, and I say that as someone who spent months shadowing and spotlighting L.A.’s yakitori scene earlier this year.

Each page reads as deliciously if not more so than the next. Clarissa Wei writes about Taiwanese cuisine from a particularly interesting perspective — as both an Angeleno and a citizen of Taiwan. Her stance as both insider and outsider give agency and voice to the idea that “Taiwanese food isn’t a subset of Chinese food because Taiwan isn’t a part of China,” she writes. Make beef rolls, turkey rice, cucumber salad, noodle soups flecked with garlic chives and studded with shrimp. Let Wei’s pantry notes and step-by-step’s be your guide. The recipes and stories are a tour through the history and culture of Taiwan.
